Introduction to “Looking Back” - He Huangyou Photography Exhibition

Born in Xikeng Village, Henggang, Shenzhen, Mr. He Huangyou is one of the pioneers of photography in Shenzhen, and a photographer who has dedicated his life to the cause of photography.

In the early 1970s, He Huangyou was transferred from the army to work in the Baoan County Cultural Museum. As the only full-time photographer in the county, he faithfully recorded the appearance of old Baoan County from the 1970s to the reform and opening up period of Shenzhen with a historical, social and humanistic attitude. As historical photographs recording Shenzhen's social history, his works witnessed the development of Shenzhen from a small fishing village to a cosmopolitan city. At the moment of the rapid development of China's urbanization construction, the original humanistic landscape in the city has gradually disappeared in the ever-changing urban construction. Images, as the most direct and effective way to record the most authentic look of the city, have left us a lasting memory of urban changes. He Huangyou’s pictures of the city of Shenzhen left a precious humanistic visual text for the development history of Shenzhen.

Scholar Luo Yingqun once said, “If Shenzhen has created a miracle, then He Huangyou is a representative who has witnessed and recorded this miracle.”
